At this point, IonQ, a US-based quantum computing company, introduced its “Superion 256” quantum computer with a 256-qubit processor in its latest report.
However, it was clarified that Superion 256 is not at a level that could instantly compromise Bitcoin’s security.
According to the company’s research, breaking the secp256k1 elliptic curve used by Bitcoin requires 19,397 physical qubits. In this case, a fault-tolerant quantum computer with approximately 19,397 physical qubits could break the secp256k1 elliptic curve used by Bitcoin in about 25.7 days.
According to the study, for a quantum attack to practically translate into the theft of Bitcoin assets, it requires not only a high number of qubits, but also a quantum computer that is error-correcting and can operate stably for a long time. Therefore, the fact that Superion 256 has a capacity of 256 physical qubits does not mean that Bitcoin’s 256-bit cryptography can be broken. According to IonQ’s calculations, a much larger, fault-tolerant system of approximately 19,397 physical qubits is needed for such an attack.
IonQ also states that the research was not an actual Bitcoin attack. The company says that no Bitcoin wallets, private keys, networks, or live systems were accessed during the study, and that a fault-tolerant quantum computer capable of carrying out such an attack does not currently exist.
IonQ recently announced that it has begun taking orders for the Superion 256 and plans to begin shipments next year.
