Existing QR Network Extends Crypto Acceptance

Travelers and local customers can now use Binance Pay at more than 3,700 businesses across Bhutan, extending cryptocurrency acceptance through a familiar domestic payment system. Binance announced the integration Aug. 17 as payment providers increasingly connect digital assets with established QR networks. The expansion follows the initial national tourism payment rollout, which began with more than 100 participating merchants in May 2025.

The platform’s global merchant footprint exceeded 21 million by March, providing the commercial backdrop for Binance’s Bhutan expansion. SB Seker, head of Asia-Pacific at Binance, described the integration as a model for other tourism-dependent markets:

“Integrating Binance Pay with Bhutan’s domestic QR network shows what real-world crypto adoption looks like when it’s built on infrastructure people already trust.”

The Bhutan connection advances Binance’s broader local QR network expansion, which had processed $40 million during its first year. Binance said in May that it intended to extend the model to at least 10 countries by the third quarter of 2026, linking crypto balances with domestic payment infrastructure already used by merchants.

$USDT Handles Settlement Behind Each QR Payment

Customers complete purchases by opening the Binance app, scanning a merchant’s existing QR code and entering the amount in Bhutanese ngultrum (BTN). They then confirm the transaction inside the app, while automatic foreign exchange conversion handles settlement in $USDT. The arrangement adds Binance Pay to DK Bank’s payment infrastructure without requiring participating businesses to replace their QR codes.

The settlement asset, Tether’s $USDT stablecoin, is designed to track the U.S. dollar across supported blockchain networks. Using a dollar-linked asset provides a consistent settlement denomination after customers enter local-currency prices, although the announcement does not identify the conversion rate provider or specify how exchange-rate spreads are calculated.

Stablecoins generally combine blockchain-based transfers with a target value tied to an external asset, most commonly the U.S. dollar. Their use in payments can limit exposure to the price swings associated with unpegged cryptocurrencies, but stablecoin stability depends on reserves, redemption arrangements, market liquidity and confidence in the issuer.

Bhutan Builds on a Broader Digital Finance Strategy

Binance has used comparable infrastructure elsewhere, including an Argentina QR payment connection launched in October 2025. That service lets users scan merchant codes through the Binance app while conversion occurs behind the transaction, demonstrating how crypto payment services can connect with established local systems instead of deploying separate merchant hardware.

Bhutan has also linked DK Bank with wider digital asset initiatives through Gelephu Mindfulness City, where a financial services licensing framework includes bank-account requirements. The QR integration extends that strategy into everyday tourism and retail payments, bringing the country’s digital finance plans directly to visitors and local merchants.

Ugyen Tenzin, DK Bank’s country CEO for Bhutan and Gelephu Mindfulness City, said the integration preserves infrastructure that merchants already use:

“We are proud to partner with Binance to bring cutting-edge crypto payment solutions to Bhutan’s merchants and visitors. Integrating Binance Pay with our domestic QR network allows us to enhance the payment experience while maintaining the trusted payment infrastructure already in place.”

“This initiative supports Bhutan’s vision of embracing innovation and providing visitors with modern, seamless payment options,” the executive added.

Eligible transactions include travel, lodging, dining, and retail purchases wherever a DK Bank Domestic QR code is accepted. Binance said customers will pay no additional fees and receive a competitive exchange rate under a promotional offer scheduled to remain available through Dec. 31.
