US President Donald Trump, in a statement to NBC News regarding reports that Iran’s religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had died, said, “We believe this is true.”
A US official also confirmed to Fox News that the Washington administration believes between Khamenei and 5 to 10 other high-ranking Iranian leaders were killed in the initial Israeli attack.
Israeli officials, in statements to Reuters and Israeli media, claimed that Iran’s religious leader had been killed. However, the Tehran government has not yet officially confirmed this claim.
Trump announced that the US had begun “large-scale combat operations” in Iran, and Israel also announced that it had launched missile attacks against Iran.
The semi-official Tasnim and Mehr news agencies, which are close to Iran, announced that Khamenei is “resolute and on duty in the field.” This statement contradicts the claims of his “assassination” that appeared in Reuters and Israeli media.
