Dubai’s DMCC, a leading international business district focused on global trade, has formalized a partnership with AQUA-INDEX, a company specializing in water commodities trading. The partnership aims to introduce the world’s first digital asset token directly backed by verified freshwater resources.

This initiative aims to create a new, tradable commodity class for water, addressing issues of scarcity and transparency in the global supply chain. The project will tokenize drinking-quality water stored in reservoirs, allowing it to be traded, held, and delivered as a standardized asset on a regulated marketplace for the first time in financial history.

Tokenizing a Vital Natural Resource

The core of the project is the creation of a digital token that represents a specific quantity and quality of fresh water. This tokenization is designed to bring unprecedented liquidity and transparency to the water market, which has historically been fragmented and unregulated despite being an essential resource.

By creating a standardized financial instrument for water, the partnership aims to establish a clear pricing mechanism based on usage value and mineral content, making it easier to manage supply, hedge against price volatility, and direct resources to areas facing water stress.

A Strategic Partnership on Global Trade

Under the terms of the agreement, AQUA-INDEX, a specialist in water commodities trading, will leverage DMCC’s extensive global network, advanced infrastructure, and established commodity trading marketplace. AQUA-INDEX will provide its expertise on water pricing and usage, offering a suite of trading and hedging products to DMCC’s member companies.

DMCC will facilitate this ecosystem but will not hold ownership of or manage the digital token itself, ensuring a clear separation of roles between the marketplace provider and the asset manager. This alliance is a key component of DMCC’s broader strategy to develop the DMCC Water Centre, a dedicated ecosystem for the global water industry that will bring together innovators, logistics providers, and commodity traders.

From the Leadership

Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman and CEO of DMCC, highlighted the critical need for this innovation. “Despite almost half the world’s population experiencing severe water scarcity at least one month a year, water as a commodity has remained untraded and unregulated in a mature market,” he said. “This partnership with AQUA-INDEX is a significant step towards creating a transparent, tradable, and legally coherent marketplace for water.”

Yaacov Shirazi, Chairman and Founder of AQUA-INDEX, explained the transformative financial approach. “By pricing water based on its usage value and standardizing it by quality, we are effectively transforming it into a financial asset,” he noted. “This is not just about trading; it’s about fundamentally improving water management globally by tackling the critical issues of scarcity, contamination, and accessibility.”
