MetaMask is marking its tenth anniversary with plans to expand beyond its roots as a self custodial crypto wallet into a broader platform for payments, savings and investing.
The Consensys developed platform also appointed Gal Eldar as chief product officer to lead Open Money, an initiative aimed at bringing payments, savings, investing and digital assets into a single self custodial platform.
Founded in 2016 by Kumavis and Dan Finlay, MetaMask began as an Ethereum browser wallet before expanding to support Bitcoin, Solana and hundreds of blockchain networks.
The platform has recorded more than 100 million downloads and trillions of dollars in cumulative transaction volume. MetaMask is available in approximately 190 countries, according to the company.
Eldar previously led MetaMask teams responsible for fiat access, swaps, crosschain bridges, transaction protection, stablecoin yield products, the MetaMask Card and its recently launched Money Account.
He joined Consensys in 2020 following its acquisition of Fluidity, where he led product development. Eldar also worked on AirSwap and early infrastructure for tokenized assets and decentralized credit.
“People do not think about wallets or blockchains. They think about what they want to do with their money,” Eldar said.
Consensys founder and CEO Joe Lubin said MetaMask will use the infrastructure developed during its first decade to build financial services that allow users to manage their assets directly.
“We built the rails. Now we are rebuilding finance on top of them,” Lubin said.
MetaMask said its security systems blocked more than 6.5 million visits to malicious websites and prevented nearly 150,000 malicious transactions during 2025. The company estimates that those protections helped users avoid more than $500 million in losses.
The wallet uses security alerts, transaction protection, real time threat monitoring and independent audits. MetaMask is also developing an Agent Wallet designed to allow artificial intelligence agents to interact with decentralized finance applications while applying security checks to transactions.
As part of the anniversary, MetaMask released an app feature that summarizes each user’s onchain activity and generates an Onchain Persona Card with a custom class and level.
